Why Diversify

Diversify your overall portfolio by choosing a number of funds that employ different investment strategies. This approach gives you the opportunity to participate in different investment markets and sectors and thus reduces the risk that a setback in any one area can have undue negative impact on your entire portfolio. The combination of investments you select should reflect the number of years you have until retirement as well as your tolerance for risk. The examples below or Calvert's Asset Allocator can help you decide how to allocate your investments among different types of funds.

More than 15 years to retirement. Investors with more than 15 years until retirement should generally focus on growth investments. Over time, these investments have the greatest potential to boost the value of your retirement accounts. More conservative investors may want to put a portion of their money in bond funds.

Between 10 - 15 years to retirement. If you have less than 15 years to retirement, you may want to direct a portion of your assets to bond funds. This way you are still able to participate in stock market advances, but with less risk than if you had all your money in stocks.

Less than 10 years to retirement. As you approach retirement, you'll need to balance your objectives for growth with your need for capital preservation. Investing a portion of your retirement assets in money market or bond funds can help you maintain a more stable portfolio. But don't forget your retirement could last 20 years or more. You will likely need to invest a portion of your assets in stock mutual funds to help maintain your purchasing power.

Above are sample portfolios. You should choose your own allocations based on your objectives and risk tolerance.
